NOBODY COMES HERE FOR NOTHIN’
Seek and ye shall find.
MOTEL, in mystical Marfa, Texas, serves as a respite for the traveler and the seeker alike. It was a second collaboration with Jantzen Matzdorff, who fell in love with the property, a former beauty salon / thrift store / counseling office with an adjacent auto shop. Our collective goal was to use vintage furnishings and existing materials whenever possible and to build things when we couldn’t. The result is an oasis within the oasis of Marfa – a cozy, surprising, inspiring space to rest and gather inspiration.
“Nobody comes here for nothin’” is the name of a poem dedicated to Marfa and MOTEL. It’s posted at the antique key boxes where you check in.
The shadows in the outdoor spaces change in the desert light throughout the day. Our favorite time to be there, though, is at night, when you can enjoy a fire, listen to the fountain, and see the stars big and bright.
Each room features its own kitchenette – because, if you’ve been to Marfa, you know that restaurants are often mercurial in their opening times.
The former auto shop serves as a larger guest suite on the property. We imparted a more industrial vibe here as a nod to its past.
