We design living, breathing spaces that tell your story.

Since 2011, our studio has built a reputation for visionary, concept-driven work. Evolving out of McCray & Co., Commonwealth is aligned under a shared vision for creating soulful, one-of-a-kind spaces using a warm, collaborative approach.

Our focus is on the narrative of a space – the dreaming and the listening and the exploration that leads to capturing a unique perspective. We weave in high and low, new and old, custom and common, material and magic to inspire a vision to come to life. We’re driven by the unexpected moments that make people light up and the belief that being in a space that feels comfortable and deeply inspiring can change everything.

Commonwealth is rooted in community – with our neighbors and with like-minded artists, architects, designers, makers, builders, movers and shakers.

Our studio is based in Austin, with an outpost in Marfa and projects throughout Texas and beyond.

We offer interior design services for residential and hospitality spaces.

HOLISTIC INTERIOR DESIGN

The focus of our studio is on full-service interior design, which allows us to address each space on the deepest level. To that end, we provide concept and creative direction, design development and documentation, customized furniture and lighting design, sourcing and procurement, construction administration, installation, and styling services for each project.

DESIGN CONSULTATION

In addition to our full-service projects, we take on a small number of design consultation projects each year. These limited-scope engagements are concentrated on design concept and tangible action items and are intended to address projects that may need a kick-start or an infusion of creative thinking to spur them along.

Grace Hall

founder + principal

Grace Hall is a multidisciplinary designer based in Austin, Texas. Her mindful, conceptual approach to design yields lush, warm spaces that people want to be in. Hailing from the seven hills of Virginia, Grace earned her degree in graphic design from VCU before finding her way to San Francisco and then home to Austin in 2008. In 2011, Grace co-founded McCray & Co., a collaborative design studio focused on hospitality spaces. Through McCray & Co., she developed her capacity and love for creating soulful and versatile interiors, and in 2025, she folded the practice into Commonwealth to further develop layered spaces for home and hospitality. Grace is a daydream believer, an active listener, and an avid puddle stomper.

Chris McCray

Principal

Chris McCray is a one-of-a-kind interior designer with more than three decades of industry experience. His curiosity and passion for boundary-pushing design is outmatched only by his quick wit and his depth of knowledge in custom fabrication. Chris studied interiors at VCU, earned his masters degree at RISD, and has taught design at three universities. Equal parts Virginian and Texan, he’s an entrepreneur at heart: his first job was selling rocks for a nickel in El Paso. Chris founded Chris McCray Designs in 1996, co-founded McCray & Co. in 2011, and is the owner of Sticks & Bones and an old yellow truck in Marfa, Texas.
