COZY COLONIAL

Our first foray into out-of-state work came to us by way of a couple we dearly love.

They had acquired a 6,000 square foot colonial-style home in Connecticut to escape the Austin summer and spend time with nearby family. Our charge was to afford them lots of space to entertain and to make it a place they couldn’t wait to return to.

Interior view of a staircase with gray and wood accents, a round wooden table with a floral arrangement, a black rug, and a landscape painting on the wall.
A dining room with a round wooden table, six beige upholstered chairs, a floral centerpiece, gray wainscoting, patterned wallpaper, white curtains, and a large modern white pendant light.
A living room corner with two green armchairs, a round wooden table with a lamp on it, puzzle pieces on the table, a ceramic cat figurine underneath, and framed vintage pinball machine artworks on the wall.

Our favorite spot: the game table. The table is vintage from Denmark, we sourced the pinball games that decorate the wall from a nearby antique mall, and the ceramic cat belonged to one of the couple’s grandmothers.

A vintage black distressed sideboard with a wooden bowl filled with decorative black rocks on top, set against a wall with ornate blue and gold floral wallpaper and framed molding, illuminated by a wall sconce.
Living room with fireplace, two windows with white curtains, a framed black-and-white landscape photo above the fireplace, gray walls, wooden floor, armchair, ottoman, side table, and decorative objects.

The den originally featured high-gloss red Venetian plaster walls and a traditional fireplace surround. We neutralized the walls with a warm grey tone and overhauled the fireplace using handmade tile from Lilywork Tile paired with a reclaimed beam for a more cozy, lived-in feel.

Living room with a white sofa, wooden coffee table, bookshelf, and a wall decorated with framed vintage books and botanical prints.
Home office with a black desk, brown chair, and large corner windows, decorated with framed book pages on the walls, a vase with dried grass, a small gray statue, and a desk lamp, with autumn foliage visible outside.
Open-concept kitchen and dining area with blue cabinets, white trim, and hardwood floors. A large wooden dining table with six black chairs, a bookshelf island, and a sliding glass door leading to an outdoor patio.

The home is populated by a blend of new and custom furnishings and antiques sourced on adventures throughout Connecticut and New York.

A bedroom corner with a dark wood bed, patterned pillows, a pink nightstand holding a contemporary lamp and a flower vase, and a rustic wooden bench next to cream curtains.
A wooden console table with a table lamp, a glass vase, and a small decorative piece in front of a round wall mirror in a hallway.
Living room with gray walls, white armchairs, a wooden coffee table, large window with white curtains, artwork on the wall, and a patterned rug.
Living room sofa with decorative pillows, a lamp with a beaded wooden base, a leafy green botanical wallpaper, and a beige and white color scheme.

We replaced all of the door and plumbing hardware to move away from the 90s-era gold and into quieter, more neutral nickel and oil-rubbed bronze tones.

Bathroom with abstract patterned wallpaper, white pedestal sink, round mirror, lavender towel, small flower vase, soap dispenser.
A cozy living room with botanical wallpaper, a beige sofa with pillows, a yellow armchair with a patterned pillow, a small wooden side table with books, a gray pouf, a crib, a faux fur rug, and sheer curtains on windows.

The nursery is furnished with a crib, a daybed, and enough play room to host cousin sleepovers all summer long.
